Many individuals opt for transaxillary breast augmentation because this procedure is generally less invasive than other types of incision patterns. Recovery time is typically faster, as well. Fortunately, Dr. Dennis Hurwitz performs this treatment at The Pittsburgh Center for Plastic Surgery in Pittsburgh, PA. It is important to know what to expect during transaxillary breast augmentation recovery, and explore how following a few simple guidelines can help you enjoy a quicker healing time.
Transaxillary breast augmentation involves making a small incision – about an inch and a half in length – in the crease of the armpit. In contrast to traditional incisions, the external breast tissue is not modified at all. Because of this minimally invasive method, post-operative scarring is virtually unnoticeable. Transaxillary breast augmentation is a complex treatment that should only be performed by a surgeon with unparalleled skill and expertise.
When you arrive home after your procedure, it is important to rest as much as possible. While moving around the house is encouraged, it is crucial that you avoid all strenuous activity for about four to six weeks. Soreness and tenderness are normal and can be managed with a combination of prescription pain medication and over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. It should be noted that post-surgical discomfort typically peaks around day two or three and begins to diminish after that. You should also remove the bandages when you arrive home. If you are wearing a compression garment, continue to wear it until your first follow-up appointment. You may remove it briefly to shower.
Although most patients do well with sedation, some may become nauseated. If this occurs, refrain from eating solid foods and drink small quantities of clear liquids until the nausea passes. If you feel fine, you may eat solid foods as soon as you feel ready.
You will need to avoid sleeping on your chest for at least six to eight weeks. Propping yourself up on multiple pillows at a 45-degree angle will help reduce swelling and inflammation and keep you more comfortable.
Continue taking pain medication as necessary. Patients who undergo transaxillary breast augmentation are typically able to completely manage discomfort as early as the first three to five days. Depending on your specific situation and healing capacity, you may be able to return to work after three days. However, if your job is physically demanding, you will need to take off at least one to two weeks. At approximately one week after your surgery, you will return to our office for your follow-up visit.
About four to five days after your procedure, you can begin shaving your underarms again. The incision line will be raised for the first several days so use caution. Do not become alarmed if the incision line is nicked. It will heal normally as long as you keep the area clean.
Depending on your specific situation, you may or may not be instructed to wear a bra for the first four to six weeks after surgery. Once you are past the initial healing phase, you will be able to resume normal activity. Be sure to closely follow the guidelines recommended by Dr. Hurwitz.
